Gentle Ben And His Sensitive Side @ The Powerhouse

Date: April 24, 2011
Venue: The Powerhouse, Brisbane
Acts: Gentle Ben And His Sensitive Side

The amber, dark-golden liquid Ben Corbett nurses between songs appears to be whisky. Or perhaps it’s some rum concoction. Either way, it’s a choice that complements the brooding, burnt-by-love crooner image of his Gentle Ben persona.

Today, Corbett and his Sensitive Side have the luxury of both Live Spark slots, and they seize the opportunity to work through a long list of songs that’s littered with gems from their three albums to date. David McCormack And The Polaroids @ The Powerhouse

Date: February 15, 2009
Venue: The Powerhouse, Brisbane
Acts: David McCormack And The Polaroids, Gentle Ben And His Sensitive Side

I’ve blogged about the Corbett brothers’ SixFtHick before, but apparently I’ve not done so for Ben’s “solo” project Gentle Ben And His Sensitive Side. A fact which is slightly peculiar because I stumbled upon the Gentle Ben incarnation of Ben Corbett long before I heard about the singularly depraved entity that is SixFtHick. Even more peculiar is that — back in the mists of the early 2000s — I wasn’t immediately taken with Gentle Ben. Not to put to fine a point on it, I was faintly repulsed by the hip-swivelling that had all the sophistication and subtlelty of a cock in the eye.

Fast forward five years or so and Ben Corbett exudes all the right sorts of machismo, style and confidence. Women want him. Men want to be him. Couple that with some fantastic crooner tunes and a PhD in dancing the flamenco and singing flawlessly in Spanish, and it’s a wonder that passers-by aren’t swooning.
